About the Program
If you’re looking for some focused dedication to developing your ceramic practice - be it finding your voice, creating a product line, or simply taking your skills to the next level - I’d like to invite you to participate in my 2019/2020 Mentorship.

This mentorship is intended for artists with intermediate-advanced training in ceramics, who are hoping to evaluate their current work and explore new ways to expand their studio practice. Our first meeting will be an opportunity for each participant to present their work and set goals/learning objectives for the year. Throughout the course of the mentorship we will meet to review our progress, share group critiques, and assess any revisions necessary. Participants are asked to take creative risks and work towards an exhibition at the end of the program, at my gallery “Black & Smith” in November 2020.

The program will consist of an intimate group and six bi-monthly meetings - four group critiques/discussions at my studio, and two field trips. The first field trip will be a full day tour of established potters’ studios in the GTA to hear about their work and how they run their businesses. The second will be a trip to Toronto to the Gardiner Museum and Royal Ontario Museum to see their ceramic collections, and a visit to the Craft Ontario shop and gallery. (mentorship fee does not include entry fee to the museums). Between meetings I will be available via email/phone for one on one discussions about the direction of the participants’ work.

Participants should:

  • be actively involved in a ceramic practice

  • have completed basic training, and be comfortable in their technical ability (this program is not a technical “how-to” or hands on area of study)

  • be willing to make a commitment for the duration of the program, to researching new sources and making new work intensively in their own studio

  • be prepared to offer and receive critical feedback to/from other artists in an open and positive environment during group critiques

  • be willing to set goals and take risks with their work
